AHN’s high school girls had the opportunity to hear from Social Entrepreneur Shailee Basnet at their first convocation of the 2017-2018 school year.
Basnet, a Nepal native, climbed Mt. Everest in 2008 with a team of other Nepali women. After their completion, the group formed Seven Women Seven Summits, a non-profit organization that promotes education, women empowerment and tourism development. Together the women climbed the seven major summits of the world. The organization has several projects focused on the welfare of women and children. One of their main initiatives is helping to retrain women who have been victims of human trafficking.
After sharing photos and memories from her trip to the summit of Mt. Everest, Shailee reminded the girls that achieving their goals is not always about size or strength, but instead is about putting one foot in front of the other and always working hard. She emphasized the importance of staying focused, while always taking time to enjoy the journey.
Senior Haley Palumbo says, "Shailee's power of story telling was raw and empowering; she spoke of the many trials of life, creating a medley of hope....I honestly never have heard a story more compelling and as inspiring as the story I heard today."
