To Be, Rather Than to Seem

Mei L. A'20 Selected for American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation

In June, rising seniors Mei L. and Josslyn P. attended the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Girls State program in Tallahassee. During this weeklong program, students assumed the roles of government leaders, campaigning in mock parties to become mayors and county and state officials of their state. Out of the 300 young women from across Florida to participate in Girls State, Mei was one of two “senators” invited to attend ALA Girls Nation! While in Washington D.C., last week, Mei participated in a mock legislature which included submitting bills and resolutions, attending senate sessions and electing officials. She and the other “senators” from each state visited Capitol Hill and historical Washington monuments and walked away at the end of the week with a deeper understanding of our government.
