To Be, Rather Than to Seem

Sorting Out Science

In their unit on mixtures and solutions, students in Mrs. Hampton’s 5th-grade science class investigated how they could separate a dry mixture of salt, gravel and diatomaceous earth.

Students were given syringes, water, screens, a funnel, a magnet and filter paper.

Their challenge was to work as a team to engineer a system to separate each element into its own cup in the fewest steps.

Through the experiment, each team defined problems, planned and carried out an investigation, designed solutions, and studied cause and effect.
