To Be, Rather Than to Seem

3rd-Grade Students Explore Functions of Seeds

In science, 3rd-grade students learned about the functions of seeds. First, they observed different types of fruits and the properties of their seeds including apples, avocados and watermelon. Our scientists got a firsthand look at the structure of seeds by dissecting lima beans. They were able to distinguish the seed coat, cotyledons and embryo. To wrap up the Structures of Life unit, students planted lettuce, sunflowers, corn and lima beans and have enjoyed seeing the growth through the last several weeks.
