Today the Academy community has a final chance to say goodbye to classmate, student and friend, Cailin Cannella. The articles and other testimonials written about this courageous young woman have been heartfelt and have touched people throughout the Tampa Bay region and beyond. A common question posed by many of her classmates and really by all of us is, why did this happen? Why would God take someone so young, with her whole life ahead of her, away from us? I don't think God intends for bad things to happen to people. What kind of God would do that?

The reasons why these things happen are best left to science and medicine. As people of faith, however, we believe Cailin now is in a better place. Her suffering has ended, she is whole again. As her swim coach Bill Shaffer said, "I know Cailin is up in heaven with a brand-new knee and swimming the breaststroke just like she always wanted to." We want to remember her as an up-and-coming swimmer and tough competitor, as a good teammate, and as a great friend. Her time with us has been cut short but her memory will live on as long as we reserve a place in our hearts for her.

Saying a final goodbye is always difficult and our grief is real, but let us recall the inspirational words from The Second Letter to Timothy, which certainly apply to Cailin, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."

Hurricane Make-Up Days
During Hurricane Irma, the Academy lost a total of five instructional days. As an administration, we have decided to make up two of those days. Two previously scheduled teacher work days will now be added back to the instructional calendar. They are Friday, February 16, 2018, and Monday, March 19, 2018.

A Reminder About Turning Left on MacDill
When traveling south on MacDill from Bay to Bay, it is illegal to turn left into AHN from 7:00-9:00 a.m. and 2:00-4:00 p.m. City of Tampa police officers are frequently in the area and will ticket those who make the left turn. As an alternate, when coming from the north, please take Bayshore past AHN and make a right on Julia, then a right on MacDill.

Chain Reaction Fundraiser

On Friday, two of Cailin Canella's friends ran the Chain Reaction fundraiser to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Our students raised a staggering $10,240. Through entry fees, free-dress day sales, and raffle/food sales, they raised $5,240, and they were matched $5,000 by the Cancer Cures Now foundation. Our prayer is that these dollars help put an end to childhood cancer. Thank you for all of your support!
