Weekly eNews: ´╗┐September 14, 2017

Dear FIRSTNAME,

It was nice to see the students back in school today after a week's absence. Hurricane Irma did give us quite a scare but in the end everything worked out better than expected. The school sustained no damage other than a few fallen branches and some other yard debris. I know some of you were not as fortunate. I hope and pray your lives are returning to normal.

Typically, the Academy follows Hillsborough County when it comes to school closing but in this case we decided to open sooner. The county has issues the Academy does not have. It has schools in many different neighborhoods, some of which may still be without power and others may have been used temporarily as shelters. We lost power for a very short time and we used the past few days to clean up the campus to ensure we would be ready to welcome back our students.

As I responded to one of our freshmen who informed me via an email that she was still without power and was unable to use her iPad or MacBook, our teachers will be understanding regarding homework and will work with their students to get them back up to speed.  We will do our best to provide students who need to charge their devices an opportunity to do so. Any student who is unable to attend school on Thursday and Friday due to storm-related issues will receive an excused absence.

Many people are saying we were lucky and that we dodged a bullet. That's certainly true, but in my mind it was more than that. I can't tell you the number of emails and texts I received from people near and far informing me they were praying for us. I believe in the power of prayer and there is no doubt that the prayers helped. On Friday morning, we will gather as a community in the Brady Center for a Mass of Thanksgiving. It will give us the opportunity as a school community to come together to thank God for hearing our prayers and the prayers of our many friends and benefactors.

Sincerely,

Art Raimo
