Spike & Splash 2023 — Making Waves Against Cancer
The Academy of the Holy Names community came together for a night of fun and philanthropy as we hosted Spike & Splash on October 3. This annual event, which combines a swim meet and volleyball matches, holds a special place in our hearts. It all began as a tribute to AHN’s beloved former head swimming coach, Mara Schultz, who valiantly battled breast cancer. Over the years, Spike & Splash evolved to encompass a broader mission – combating pediatric cancer, inspired by our own student-athlete and swim angel, Cailin Cannella, who showed unwavering courage in her battle against osteosarcoma.
The atmosphere was electric, as athletes showcased their skills in the pool and on the volleyball court, but it was our collective commitment to a powerful cause that truly shone through. Many took the opportunity to purchase burgers, snacks, and beverages prepared and provided by the Dads Club, with proceeds going directly to the cause. Through admissions, shirt, and food sales, the Academy raised over $8,000 to be split between Moffitt Cancer Center and the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
To top off an incredible night, AHN’s varsity volleyball team defeated Tampa Catholic, while the Academy and Jesuit swimming and diving teams defeated Plant High School! Events like Spike & Splash remind us of the incredible power of community and compassion at the Academy. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you who joined us and contributed to the cause.
