To Be, Rather Than to Seem

School uniforms were an important part of the “look” for high school students at The Academy of the Holy Names in the 1930s. Through the years the uniforms created a sense of belonging and instilled pride in the Academy and its core values. Without having to concern themselves with competition over clothes or economic differences, students could experience a sense of equality, respecting the talents, abilities, and the intellectual and spiritual potential of each person. In this way students could live the school motto: Esse Quam Videri–To Be, Rather than to Seem.

The Academy of the Holy Names is grateful for the generous support from the following alumni, parents,
grandparents, and friends who helped make the dream of a Heritage Center possible.
