One of the main design challenges posed by
AHN was the consolidation of the various
learningspaces for theMiddleSchool intoasingle
building. Once the key planning decisions were
made tomove the existing art andmusic studios
over toanewArtsCenteron theMacDillCampus,
the existing Media Center was quickly identified
as the best location for the newMiddle School.
With the second key decision to decentralize the
school into three locations, consistent with the
needs of the Elementary School, Middle, and
HighSchool the entire buildingopenedup as the
natural location.
After studying the Media Center’s somewhat
inflexible structural layout, the FNI team
determined that each floor could be split into
two Small Learning Communities that would be
connectedbyacentralcommonspace.Conference
rooms and Teacher Collaborative Workrooms
will act as buffers between this central area and
two learning zoneswhilemaintaining adegreeof
transparency.
