“Flexicore” Concrete Plank System
An analysis of the construction documents provided by
AHN revealed that the lower level of the Media Center
was constructed with pre-cast concrete slabs known as
“Flexicore”or “HollowCore.”These slabs are supportedby
concrete block (CMU) bearingwalls, punctuated by support
pilasters. This kind of system is inherently inflexible and
restricts opportunities for the reconfiguration of interior
walls. Even thoughmany of the bearing wall partitions can
be removed, thepilasterswill need to remain. TheFNI team
developedconceptualfloor layouts that take theserestrictions
into account while creatingwell lit and dynamic spaces.
