For some people, a favorite memory of time at
the Academy or Sacred Heart is a Sister standing
at the blackboard—or SMART Board—teaching
her latest lesson; for others, itmay be sneaking to
the thirdfloor toget a glimpseof theSisters’ living
quarters.Nomatter thememory, there is certainly
a Sister of theHolyNames at the heart of it along
with the loveand support eachSisterhasprovided
to somany throughout the years.
For this reason, inconjunctionwith thecreationof
the Academy’s facilitiesmaster plan, HolyNames
alumni, Sisters and Academy administrators have
come together in the hope of building a special
place to preserve and celebrate the legacy of
the Sisters of the Holy Names: the Holy Names
HeritageCenter.
In a museum-quality setting, the Holy Names
Heritage Center will serve as a permanent space
that articulates the storiesof theSisters, the school
and the relationships within the community. It
will alsobe aplace that celebrates and informs the
present and the future as the Academy’s history
continues to be written. Located at the entrance
to theChapel of BlessedMarieRoseDurocher, the
centerwill strengthenHolyNamesconnections for
generations to come.
For more than 100 years, the Sisters
of the Holy Names have left an
indelible mark on the students
educated at the Academy and
on those that have been the
beneficiaries of their ongoing
servicewithin theTampa Bay
community.TheHolyNames
Heritage Center is designed
tostandasacelebrationof the
richhistoryof theSistersof the
Holy Names and to recognize
the enormous contributions that
they havemade within the school
and beyond its doors. The center
will also serve to further the Academy’s mission
to provide enriching spiritual opportunities that
support theSNJMmission and charism.
It ishard to imaginea time theremaynotbeaSister
waiting to greet students in the halls, cheering on
athletes at their games or clapping the loudest at a
fineartsperformance—theirpresence isacertainty
at school events.TheHolyNamesHeritageCenter
is a tiny way to give back to the Sisters who have
devoted their lives to somany, and it is now the
Holy Names community’s turn to do something
tohonor them.
