was recently
featured in the Tampa Tribune for her
40 years of service toMeals onWheels
in Temple Terrace, Fla. Upon Owens’
retirement as a nurse in 1975, she
registered as a volunteer the day the
TampaChapter for thenonprofitopened,
and the firstmeal she deliveredwas the
first meal served to anyone in Temple
Terrace. Owensnowservesas the route
coordinator, ensuring that five drivers
delivermeals every day to50 recipients
in the city,while alsodeliveringher own
routes and training new volunteers. In
2010, she received the Amy Shimberg
Volunteer of the Year award. A Meals
on Wheels spokesperson said of her,
“Mary Rose has been with us from
the beginning and really is the ultimate
volunteer.”
