Sisters of the Holy Names
Founded in 1843 in Longueuil, Quebec, by Blessed Marie Rose Durocher, the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary were one of the first Canadian congregations of women religious dedicated to the ministry of education. Inspired by the zeal of Blessed Marie Rose, the Sisters seek to respond to the challenges of today through various forms of education—education in the faith, education in schools and education for justice.
The Sisters are dedicated to the full development of the human person through education, social justice, contemplation and the arts. They live each day promoting their core values which are at the heart of their charism. Special concern for poor and disadvantaged people, women and children characterizes their ministry in every setting. From their foundation, the Sisters have valued creativity and artistic expression in their members, students and partners in ministry.
Current SNJM schools in North America include: the Academy of the Holy Names (Tampa, Fla.), the Academy of the Holy Names (Albany, N.Y.), St. Mary's Academy (Winnipeg, Manitoba), Holy Names High School (Oakland, Calif.), St. Mary's Academy (Portland, Ore.), Holy Names Academy (Seattle, Wash.), Ramona Convent Secondary School (Alhambra, Calif.) and Le Saint-Nom-de-Marie (Montreal, Quebec).
“I have come to cast fire on the Earth, and how I wish it were already kindled.”
